A HUB of Innovation

This Fall the fourth graders repurposed single use water bottles into scientific equipment. With two common water bottles each fourth grader was able to build a decomposition column. This science unit taught by Mrs. Weiss to all fourth graders brings ideas off the page and into their hands. Kids choose what they want to watch decompose. On the day I collected these photos I saw everything from bread chunks to skittles.
Working with a partner the kids begin their unit on ecosystems. This is the first experiment that they will take through the scientific process. They choose a testable question about decomposers and work with their partner to design their experiment, collect data and draw conclusions about the results. With hairy fungi and shriveling pieces right before their eyes this hands on lesson will not be soon forgotten.
